How to edit a suite parameter in testng.xml file with a method(test case)?

I am new to testng. Like we can edit the global variables using methods in java. How to change/set the parameters inside the testng.xml file?

I have a scenario in which i am getting a reference number from one of my test cases and to use it in another test case which is in same class but another group.
